Women's Club Wins DAR Award The Lower Providence
Women's Club, the preservation group at The Lower Providence Community House, will receive the Daughters of the American Revolution's Historic Preservation Award on March 14.
After reviewing the detail, description and authenticity of the preservation project, The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Chapter of the DAR recommended the women's club for the honor.
The old log cabin, located across from Community House Middle School, was built in 1938 and is designated a Mecklenburg County Historical Landmark. Constructed by local farmers, the building served as a meeting place for women active in a Homemaker's Club. The club's most recent
preservation accomplishments are restoration of the fireplace and chimney. Preservation of the log walls is currently underway. As part of fundraising activities to continue this effort, The Lower Providence Community House will launch its fourth Monthly Lecture Series on Sunday March 25. Taylor Piephoff, a local naturalist, will speak on "Backyard Birds."
