Single skating can be intimidating because you are out there alone, but here you have a team goal and you do it together at the same time. It's a lot of hard work to get there, but when it happens it's magical." Adult Skating Dreams Marie McDaniel, senior director of conference services for Ballantyne- based Premier, hits the Ice House three mornings a week at 8 a.m. to practice an hour before work. McDaniel began figure skating lessons a year ago at the age of 45 and has already passed the first test level through U.S. Figure Skating, called "Moves in the Field." "I have a competitive nature so I want to pass these tests for my own personal goals," she says, adding she hopes to compete someday. "Our adult learn-to- skate program is soaring, as it is all around the country," McIntyre notes. "We have skaters up to 54. For most, it's a chance to do something they always wanted to as a child but couldn't afford or try for some reason." McDaniel's determination to learn to skate later in life has proven highly rewarding. "It's so addictive doing spins and jumps at my age, and I am doing them well, which is motivating and inspiring."
