When Chicago incorporated in 1837, the city adopted its aspirational motto, "Urb Horto," Latin for "City in a Garden." Chicago went on to become a leader in landscape architecture, and today boasts more than 500 gardens, according to Choose Chicago, including one atop city hall. Chicago blossomed after the Illinois & Michigan Canal was finished in 1848 and truly took off with the arrival of the railroad. Not even the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 — which killed 250, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed about a third of the city — deterred city growth for long. Today as the Midwest's largest city at 2.7 million people, Chicago offers in-depth cultural and culinary options. Seven Chicago restaurants recently made OpenTable's list of "100 Best Restaurants for a Big Night Out in America in 2018," and Taste of Chicago, a big annual food festival in Grant Park (July 12-15), is another local delight. There are also more than 60 craft breweries, many of which are part of beer tours. For a sumptuous breakfast or lunch (dinner is not served), Wildberry Pancakes and Cafe, 130 E. Randolph St., is a great place to indulge. It is also a good spot from which to start a day of shopping or exploring. Travel a few blocks north and cross the Chicago River to see the historic Wrigley Building, the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower and then treat yourself to a shopping adventure.
