And not just the scenery engages Fricke, who recommends renting a bike from Divvy, the city's highly accessible bike-sharing service. "There are museums and parks, Navy Pier and people doing everything from yoga classes to enjoying the beaches," she adds. Even the Windy City's breezes feel good in summer. Fricke recommends staying near downtown because of its central location, walkability and easy access to public transportation to travel in and around the city. Accommodations range from well-known chains to historic hotels such as The Drake, which opened in 1920, and the Palmer House Hilton with its Beaux Arts architecture. Fricke especially likes staying near the Chicago River at the north end of The Loop, a multiblock area defined by the "L," the city's elevated train system.
