Barney and Ratliffe emphasize seasonal locally grown, organic food on breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Their goat burger is a favorite, as are dinner entrees like Veal T-bone in Fig Reduction with Smoky Grits and Collards, or Pan Seared Scallops over Creamy Applewood Bacon Succotash with Root Vegetables. Desserts range from rustic fruit tarts, or galettes, to homemade Moon Pies and Almond Joys. Bottles of local wine and microbrews to complement the cuisine are available at convenience- store prices. The Saxapahaw General Store has been so successful that its owners have paired with Doug Williams and Claire Haslam to open The Eddy Pub on the top floor of the upper mill. The decor retains the original brick walls and wooden beams, with furnishings fashioned of factory artifacts, such as an antique spring-loaded yarn storage bin that doubles as a seating area. The packed pub offers waited table service inside and on the deck — an ideal spot at sunset — with internationally influenced dishes like Shepherd's Pie with a Moroccan influence.
