Saxapahaw is a 21st century village that leverages historical preservation, local food sources, the beauty of nature and architectural sustainability all in one charming, highly livable package. 88 BALLANTYNE MAGAZINE Enjoying the scenery of the Haw River is local pastime. in 1977, he bought the adjacent property, including 600 acres and 66 mill houses, envisioning his hometown as a bedroom community for people working in Chapel Hill or Carrboro. "Some people thought I was crazy, but to me Saxapahaw was the pearl of great price," Jordan observes, citing the Biblical parable about selling all one has to purchase something of great value. Reinventing Historic Buildings Then, in 1994 after a tornado tore the roof off the mill, Jordan seized the opportunity to buy the mill back, and with the expertise of his son, Mac, an architect, started reinventing the historical buildings. Last summer, Jordan Properties' solar and geothermally powered FALL 2012 Guitarist Johnny Waken of Jimmy Magoo and The Good Life plays in Saxapahaw with The Paperhand Puppet Band.
