THE BATESES: N.C. STATE VS. NORTH CAROLINA Opposing factions in the Bates' Ballantyne household comprise one of North Carolina's most bitter and longest-standing rivalries. Joey Bates is an alumnus of N.C. State in Raleigh, while his wife, Meredith, graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. The famed Carolina-State rivalry is as much a part of the South as sweet tea and barbecue, as the Wolfpack and Tar Heels have squared off in countless historic showdowns. Joey grew up disliking Carolina, a sentiment that only intensified when he started going to State. Meredith, meanwhile, like the rest of her family, was a hardcore Carolina fan, and there was never any question where she would go to college. The two both graduated in 2001, and met shortly thereafter through mutual friends. Despite being on opposing sides of a heated rivalry, they hit it off, and married in 2006. But they still go head-to-head on game days. When the couple first married, Meredith sewed together State and Carolina flags. The victor gets to display the flag in the front yard, with his or her team prominently displayed — along with bragging rights for the rest of the day. The battle also wages on in the family's bonus room, where Carolina blue memorabilia dominates one side, and State red the other. "Thankfully all her stuff is behind the couch — or what I call the visitors' section — so when I'm watching the game I can't see it," Joey says. And now both Joey and Meredith are strategically positioning themselves in the hopes of swaying their kids to pull for their team. Joey says he's already started on his 2-year-old son, regularly dressing him in State gear. But fate may have intervened with the couple's infant daughter, who was born in March. Meredith was in the hospital on the same day as a big State-Carolina basketball game. "That was probably the only time in our marriage when we actually watched a game together," says Joey. The couple started a running joke that whatever team won the game would decide where their daughter would go to college. In the end Carolina pulled out a last-minute 69-67 victory. "It hurt, but I had to admit defeat on that one," Joey says.
