ANSWER Scholarships Go to Area Moms Charlene Edwards Kanetra Jamison The ANSWER Scholarship Endowment, a Ballantyne-based charitable endeavor founded by Susan Andersen, has awarded college scholarships to seven area mothers for the upcoming school year, to aid them in earning a four-year college degree or an associate degree. Andersen created the fund as a way to strengthen local families. Recipients must be raising school-age children, show demonstrated need for scholarship aid and be earning their first college degree. Most recipients either work full or part-time while attending college. Recipients from Charlotte this year include Charlene Edwards, a freshman at Pfeiffer University, who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in business administration; Kanetra Jamison, a rising senior at Johnson C. Smith University seeking a bachelor's in social work; and Alison Thornburg, who is re-training to become a registered nurse at Carolinas College of Health Sciences, and is the endowment's Levine Scholar, an award made possible with a gift from the Leon Levine Foundation. Another area recipient is Teena Allen from Indian Land, S.C., a sophomore at Winthrop University working toward a bachelor's in social work with a minor in sustainability.
