Elegant Beauty Orchids have long enchanted people for their elegant beauty, sensuality and unusual form. According to Dorrian, an orchid is three sets of three: three petals, three sepals and three sexual organs — pistol, stamen and ovum — combined into one. "That is the defining pinnacle of an orchid, what differentiates them from any other plant on the planet," he says. Despite their seemingly fragile blossoms, orchids appear everywhere on the globe with the exception of aquatic and arctic extremes. Some grow right up to the edge of glaciers, and others thrive underground in Australia, including three species that never see daylight. Here in the Carolinas there are 65 native species. Every week Dorrian and his staff spend eight hours freshening the orchids on display in the conservatory and main building. The conservatory relies on state-of-the-art equipment to maintain an ideal interior Orchid Conservatory Manager Joe Dorrian oversees the care of orchids as well as arches of tillandsia (left) that greet visitors.
