Top: Horses silhouetted in the morning mist are a lovely sight in Bluegrass Country. Middle Left, Right: Spectacular thoroughbreds draw attention at Keeneland Race Course. Right: Since winning the Triple Crown, American Pharoah spends much of his time near Lexington. BALLANTYNE | escape scenic pasturelands of America's most iconic horse farms. Each route features historic sites and quaint country stores or lunch spots, including Wallace Station and Windy Corner Market, two eateries owned by Lexington superstar chef Ouita Michel. Most visitors drive — each circuit takes an hour — but others cycle to fully experience the gorgeous views. Those champing at the bit to get up close and personal with racing thoroughbreds can take professionally guided farm tours that include selfie ops at renowned operations like Claiborne Farm, where a tombstone marks the grave of beloved Secretariat. This year approximately 3,000 visitors have also gotten tickets in advance to meet and greet the magnificent American Pharoah (he is usually gone from July to January).
