"Having time away to explore and meet people all over the world gave me a renewed love of learning. " — Caroline Cary "One of the neatest aspects of my gap year was the international community I experienced on the ship," Dove says. "It became customary to hear conversations in different languages as I walked across the ship." Time spent on volunteer excursions working with local children off the ship was equally valuable. "As a photographer, I realized how power dynamics are shifted when the camera is placed in the hands of a child. Photography is instant and accessible, and the kids could express themselves creatively with very little training." Caroline Cary saw Buddhist monks in Cambodia (far right, moving clockwise); visited the world's largest salt flat, in Bolivia; enjoyed The Swing at the End of the World in Ecuador; and assisted this kindergarten student and others in Peru.
