But nothing happened. "I was like, 'Uh-oh. How do I market this?'" says Downing, who works full time for Bank of America in business development in the small business department. He tried Google ads, Etsy and consignment stores, which were too expensive, he says. Then he showed his pieces at Waxhaw's Autumn Treasures arts and crafts festival. "That was perfect," he recalls. "I was able to show my work and meet and talk with people about woodworking and taking care of the cutting boards. I love that." Downing got his frst custom order at the festival from a former manager of Vine American Kitchen. He commissioned 50 custom boards to use with fatbread pizzas. Downing now regularly attends the fall show and the Waxhaw Art Kaleidoscope festival in the spring. "The festival was key. It kept me busy enough and it justifed why I was doing (the business)," he says. Business strategists agree that community connections can be a big advantage for small businesses. Shoppers feel good supporting local artisans and like talking with artists and developing a more intimate connection with the piece being bought. Real estate agent Cheri Ritter uses Downing's pieces as housewarming gifts, proud they are made locally and customized to each client's kitchen. Ritter, who lives in Waxhaw and works out of the Allen Tate Co.'s Ballantyne ofce, knew Downing through their children.
