wire | BALLANTYNE Students Again Place Nationally Students at Ballantyne Elementary School logged 2,112,954 minutes of reading during the ninth annual 2015 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, earning the school 13th place among 6,229 schools in 28 countries. The previous summer, students at the school came in 11th with 3,534,504 minutes of reading. The event is a free summer program designed to encourage children to read and log their minutes spent with books to counter the "summer slide," a learning loss effect when schools are not in session. Dance Teams Win at Competition Dancers on Carolina Dance Capital's teams between the ages of 6 and 18 competed this summer in Virginia at the Revolution National Talent Competition, one of the leading dance competition organizations in the country. BIZ BUZZ Omni Montessori Names New Leader Charlane Baccus has been named the new head of school at Omni Montessori, which serves children age three through the ninth grade. With the appointment, Baccus now leads one of only two schools in North Carolina recognized by Association Montessori International/USA. She recently co-founded the Green Tree Montessori School, completed her Master's in Education at Endicott College and became a primary teacher certifed by Association Montessori International. Omni Montessori also recently received $90,000 from Alan and Gwen Gardner to start The Gardner Family Endowment Fund to promote diversity at the school. Details: www.omni-montessori.org.
