Younger Set Spotlighting our kids and schools Prudential Honors Student Alexander Fultz of Pineville, an eighth grader at Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy, was named by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards one of America's Top 10 Youth Volunteers for 2019. As a state honoree, Alexander received $1,000 and an all-expense- paid trip to Washington, D.C., for several days of national recognition events. Fultz created a nonprofit that has donated thousands of toys and clothing items to hospitals in several states to brighten the days of hospitalized patients. Info on his work: bit.ly/2VjQs7L. Sorority Presents Debutantes In April, the Union County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority presented eight young women to the community at its Annual Debutante Cotillion, held at the Union County Agricultural Center. Shawn Johnson, a senior at South Mecklenburg High School, was crowned Miss Debutante 2019. Alexius Parks, a junior at Porter Ridge High School, was first runner-up, and Kendi Deveaux, a senior at Marvin Ridge High School, was second runner-up. Details: unioncountydst.org. Free Class on Youth Mental Health Atrium Health, in partnership with the YMCA, is offering a free Youth Mental Health First Aid Class for adults working with youth on Monday, Sept. 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sara's YMCA. The class is open to the community and will teach participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance-use disorders in adolescents ages 12-18, and how to provide support and help connect individuals to appropriate care. Registration: bit.ly/2IRQCwk. Alexander Fultz CMS Names Principal, Area Leader Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) recently announced two appointments impacting the Ballantyne area. Jane Armbruster was named principal at Providence Spring Elementary. She has been assistant principal at Elon Park Elementary since 2014. Tangela Williams was named superintendent of the Southeast Learning Community. Land for Elementary School Purchased The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board has approved a $13.2 million land deal for a new elementary school across the street from Ardrey Kell High School. The purchase of 37 acres was part of the $922 million school bond package approved by voters in 2017. Slated to open in 2023, the new school is expected to pull students from Elon Park, Hawk Ridge and Polo Ridge elementary schools to help manage growth in the area. Biz Buzz Company news and annoucements Insurer Opens Ballantyne Office Northwestern Mutual has opened a Ballantyne office at 11605 North Community House Road. The Ballantyne Receives Brand Accolade The Ballantyne, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Charlotte has been selected as a 2018 Marriott Franchise Hotel of the Year under the "Distinctive Luxury" category. This award is granted based on quality, brand standards, operations and other components measured by Marriott.
