Mukherjee wants her students to maintain a close connection to their communities both near and far. Kathak, afterall, is more than dance. "In Kathak, students become very aligned: mind, body, soul," Mukherjee says. True to Kathak, the May performance will tell a story, dedicated to the theme of Bandhan, the Hindi word for eternal bond. While the music will mostly be in Hindi, introductions in English will allow everyone to understand each dance's meaning. Mukherjee takes a genre-defying approach with her choices for the concert. She keeps young students engaged by blending Western popular culture with ancient Indian dance. Songs are a blend of old and new, costumes combine elements of Indian and Western attire.
