"I grew up close to the coast and took day trips to the beach as often as I could every summer." Susan Shackelford A freelance writer and editor, Susan Shackel- ford is a former sports writer for The Miami Herald and The Char- lotte Observer. She is a Phi Beta Kappa journal- ism graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. "I like the beach, but I love the mountains," Shackelford says. "I especially enjoy hiking to waterfalls, taking in vistas and reflecting on our world's bounti- ful beauty." Michael J. Solender A Charlotte-based free- lance writer, Michael J.
