Approximately 30 people attend. Basenspiler schedules the meetings early in the morning so participants can go about their day afterward. Over breakfast, veterans engage in what Basenspiler calls "camaraderie-based networking." She likens the experience to the chow hall in the military, where veterans get away from the serious side of their service and relax. "Transitioning to the civilian way of life brings challenges," she says. "These gatherings let veterans share their stories, questions and successes. It's a place of trust and authenticity." Former senior Air Force officer Michael Krueger, a Charlotte native and Ballantyne resident, has attended Charlotte Veterans Network lunches since 2012 when he retired from his last assignment in Virginia and moved back to Charlotte.
