FALL 2016 BALLANTYNE MAGAZINE 25 Dance Recital Supports Indian Education The Ashwini Kathak Dance Academy in Ballantyne, which teaches the classical Indian dance of Kathak, held its annual recital this summer. More than 600 people attended the event, which featured performances by students, Indian food, fashion and accessories. The event raised more than $5,000 for Ekal Vidyalaya, a nonprofit organization that provides education, health services and economic-development help to remote and underserved villages in India. Race Honors Fallen Firefighter Anytime Fitness of Pineville, along with Hendrick Honda and Sky High Sports, will hold a 5K and one-mile fun run Saturday, Sept. 10, to honor Pineville firefighter Richard Sheltra, who lost his life in the line of duty in Pineville earlier this year. The race starts at 8 a.m. at Belle Johnson Community Center in Pineville. Entry fee: $25. Proceeds benefit the Richard Sheltra Memorial Fund to purchase new gear and defray educational expenses for first responders. Info: 704-889-0800. Staybridge Helps 'Give Kids The World' Staybridge Suites Charlotte Ballantyne hosted its seventh annual Give Kids The World Village Luncheon on May 11. The barbecue event raised $1,965 for the nonprofit that treats children with life- threatening illnesses and their families to fantasy vacations at Give Kids The World Village, a 70-acre "storybook" resort. Hunger Project Hits 10 Million Meals Community volunteers joined St. Matthew Catholic Church and Elevation Church in Blakeney this summer to pack one million meals in one weekend for hungry children and families in Charlotte, Nicaragua and Haiti. The Million Meal Weekend also created the 10th million meal packed by Servants With a Heart, a local nonprofit founded in early 2011. More info: www.servantswithaheart.org.
