The event kicks of Saturday, May 7, with the "Around the World Embassy Tour," when 45 non-European countries open their doors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Embassy Row and in International Court (another embassy neighborhood). "You can't have this experience anywhere else in the world," Shulman notes. "From the Philippines, you cross the street to Australia, then back to Peru. One year the Australian ambassador was cooking shrimp on the barbie for everyone." Lines can be long at larger embassies, but countries often entertain people out front with music and dance. Saturday, May 14, brings "A Shortcut to Europe," with 28 countries in the European Union (EU) inviting the public inside. Belgium samples its chocolates, Ireland its beer and the United Kingdom its tea. Saturday, May 21, is Fiesta Asia sponsored by embassies in that region of the world, and the fnal weekend features the Embassy Chef Challenge. While in the area, you can dine at 100 restaurants within 10 blocks, including B Too, a contemporary Belgian eatery run by the former ofcial chef of the EU, who ofers a wonderful children's menu. Monuments The National Mall is resplendent with monuments memorializing beloved presidents and patriots.
