"During undergrad, the mistake I made was not getting out there and making connections," Lawrence recalls. "It was nice to fnd a program that was of that like mind. "There was defnitely trepidation about starting back to school," he adds. "But now that I'm back, there's a diferent feel. You're back because you volunteered for it, and there's the responsibility and excitement. I know this is helping me in the long run, and I'm gaining real skills." Improving Life Skills Many of CPCC's initial course oferings are targeted to helping employers develop their workforces. Billy Weinstock, 65, completed an introductory computer course at CPCC this fall thanks to his employer's encouragement. A server at Gallery Restaurant at The Ballantyne Hotel and Lodge, Weinstock says he didn't know how to use computers and was reluctant to try. Then his boss asked if he'd be interested in taking a course, and Weinstock said yes. Since completing the course, Weinstock has bought a laptop. He can navigate his employer's computer systems and has discovered a side beneft: staying in touch with his son in California and communicating long distance with a sick friend. "The class was a very good atmosphere," says Weinstock, who continued to work 30 hours a week while in class. "You knew it was just two days a week to get some education."
