BALLANTYNE PINEHURST Ballantyne to Pinehurst - 75 miles - 1 hr., 59 min. oÕÀÃiÊ`iÃi}niÀÊ on>l`Ê,oÃÃÊ«l>ÞÃÊoÕÌÊovÊÊ >ÊÀoÕ}hÊÌh>ÌÊÜ>ÃÊV>lli`ʺ>ÊÜ>ÃÌiÊ>Ài>°» IT'S THE CRADLE OF GOLF in this country, our native St. Andrews. Storied in golfing legend and lore for over a century, Pinehurst Resort embodies the heart and soul of the game. Situated only 75 miles east of Ballantyne in North Carolina's Sandhills region, this fabled resort is perennially on the vacation wish list of serious duffers. Legend has it that after a dairy farmer complained this activity was adversely affecting his herd's milk production, Tufts lured Scottish links designer Donald Ross to create a golf course — and the rest is history. That history is making news again. In anticipation of hosting the first back- to-back U.S. Open men's and women's championships in 2014, Pinehurst Resort recently completed a remarkable restoration of legendary Course No. 2, returning it to its original Donald Ross VonÌinÕi`ÊonÊ«>}iÊ9£ perfect winter resort setting. The inventive entrepreneur snapped up sizable holdings of the rolling terrain for about a dollar an acre and built a magnificent hotel. As he predicted, elite Northeasterners — Rockefellers, DuPonts and Morgans included — flocked to Pinehurst.
