says. "My eldest daughter called him 'Baboo,' and the nickname stuck with her and her sisters until he died. The ring is a sweet reminder of him. I guess one day I'll have a sweet dilemma, about which one of my girls wears it next!" Mouillé wears her own favorite legacy jewelry — a 100-year-old diamond she inherited from her Aunt Elsie. The diamond carries special sentiment because it has been lost and found twice. The first time, her aunt lost it on the driveway one winter while packing the car for a trip south; after the snow melted the following spring, the diamond surfaced on the pavement. Then, after Mouillé had worn it for 20 years, the diamond did another disappearing act. "I was devastated because it was a real antique piece, and one-of-a-kind, and even though the diamond was not great quality, it had so much sentimental value," she recalls. A year later while she was cleaning out a file cabinet, the treasured diamond magically reappeared at the bottom of the drawer, prompting Mouillé to use her skill and design flair to reset it in such a way that it could never fall out again. Mouillé, whose studio is open only by appointment, works with many customers like Parsons, who want to restyle a legacy piece while maintaining the sentiment. Many of them also decide to redesign their own engagement and wedding rings in the hopes those pieces will become a legacy for their children. In Mouillé's view, jewelry carries a lot of emotion because of its beauty. "Jewelry made of metal and precious gems is the one thing that remains for countless generations, long after the loved ones are gone," she observes.
