WINTER 2011-2012
Fifteen Rotary and Interact clubs in the greater Charlotte area held their annual Duck Race in October at Tailrace Marina in Mount Holly, raising funds for the eradication of polio, a primary mission of Rotary International. Duck Race organizer, Ineke Van der Meulen, a member of the Ballantyne Rotary Club, reports that the event raised nearly $60,000. Some 7,500 rubber ducks raced in the event, with participants "adopting" a duck for $10. Festivities featured a steel-drum band, boat rides, golf and corn-hole contests, free kayak and canoe rentals, a dunking booth, food, drinks and the "purple pinky" for children and grandchildren, the universal sign that a child in a developing country has been immunized for polio.
