HANNAH KERLEY Community House Middle School Blanket Blessings for Children with Cancer Hannah Kerley was so determined to start a new girls' service club at school to make blankets for children with cancer that she found a sponsor and got approval from the principal in one day. Now in its second year, Blanket Blessings has donated 70 no-sew fleece blankets assembled by Hannah and 20 fellow students to Levine Children's Hospital. The club also has delivered blankets to the homeless. "We hope to keep them warm," says Hannah, the daughter of Mike and Lynn Kerley. "Thank you to everyone for showing up to help every week, for donating fleece and money to buy fleece, for spending time embroidering, creating logos and websites and for sharing this dream with me!" www.BlanketBlessings.webs.com The past three summers Jessica, Savannah and Dawson Schuchmann are first out of bed some mornings. The children of Chad and Amber Schuchmann are eager to glean crops in the fields of local farmers for delivery to shelters or distribution centers, such as operation Reachout in Monroe. Notices of fields available for picking are sent by the Gleaning Network, a mission of the Society of St. Andrews. Jessica's favorite crop is tomatoes. "Sometimes I get hot, but I like knowing food is not going to waste," she says. Savannah likes to clean strawberries. "I like knowing that I am out there helping someone have dinner," she says. Dawson thinks it is fun to pick corn. "I like digging my hands into the dirt and taking vegetables that go to people who need them," he says.
