"School's out!" often means three months for a child to indulge in pleasure by lazing around the pool, hanging out at the movies or just plain doing nothing. But for some Ballantyne youngsters with a big heart, summer vacation is a chance to devote time to a mission that has meaning and purpose in their life. The energy, passion and commitment such youngsters bring to their chosen cause often surprises their own parents. These children set financial goals that far exceed those an adult would set. They plan events that would daunt the skill of professional organizers. They envision eradicating a problem entirely. They dream big. This story shares a glimpse of eight students from Ballantyne elementary and middle schools whose service projects are an inspiration for the entire community. HANNAH DUDLEY The British American School of Charlotte Youth Trip to Burundi with Samaritan's Feet On a mission trip to Haiti with her youth group last year, Hannah Dudley had an experience that reminded her of what she had seen on a visit to Burundi. "It was sad to see the children who were similar to those in Burundi, and I wanted to do something," says the daughter of Eric and Michele Dudley. So Hannah committed to raising money through babysitting and sale of fair trade coffee to join 12 other Charlotte youth this summer on a Samaritan's Feet trip to Burundi. There, she will wash people's feet and outfit them with shoes to avoid foot- borne diseases. The trip holds extra meaning because Jean-Marie Nshimiymana from Bujumbura, Burundi has lived with her family for two years while studying at CPCC. www.SamaritansFeet.org Jean-Marie Nshimiymana and Hannah Dudley BALLANTYNE MAGAZINE 59 SUMMER 2014 Ball Summer 14 - 2.indd 59 5/21/14 4:31 PM
